Flat Stanley

Wednesday, February 11, 2004

Dear Parents,
We have been reading a book called Flat Stanley. It is about a boy who was smashed flat by an unfortunate but painless accident. Stanley enjoys many strange encounters in his flat condition such as sliding under doors, flying on a string like a kite, and traveling through the mail. We have each made our own Flat Stanley and now we need your help.

Every student will mail a Flat Stanley to visit a friend or relative. Hopefully, that friend will take Stanley on some sort of adventure before sending him back with pictures and/or postcards of where he has been. You, the parent, must help your child decide on who would most like a visit from Flat Stanley. It should be someone willing to get involved and help your child with this project.

Stanley will be returned, by mail, to your child at home. How exciting for your child to receive "real" mail! All letters will be shared with the class and students will create a display board (poster board, tri-board, scrapbooks are just some examples). We will be posting on a map all the places Stanley came from and the names of the students who sent him there. We will display this in the library for the whole school to enjoy.

Aside from the obvious Geography lesson, we are learning to write letters, address envelopes, and communicate through the mail.

We are utilizing the depths of our imagination and are having a would of fun! Your continuous support is greatly appreciated by both the students and myself!

Thank you,
Mrs. Crompton
