On May 5, 1891 the Omaha and South Texas Land Company purchased 1,700 acres on which to build their "first class community", Houston Heights, so named because it was 22 feet higher than Houston proper. They erected eleven magnificent mansions, like the one of an early associate, N.L. Mills, at 1510 Heights Boulevard. This house is gone now. A few of the original Victorians still exist on Heights, some have been saved on other streets, and some new ones are being built. |
