| This is a bad picture, I know, but if you look at the reflections on the water by the houses across the street, you can see that the water had completely covered the front yards. Our sidewalk is covered, too. The water had risen to the top of the first porch step. Friday was heavy trash day, a monthly event where people can put anything out for garbage pickup. If you tear down your garage, you can put it out by the curb and it will be taken away. In a neighborhood like this where there are always renovations going on, there are usually lots of piles of old lumber in front of houses on heavy trash day. We saw all the piles on Rutland Street float by during the night. Throughout the night, neighbors would step out on to their porches to check the progress of the water, and we'd all wave back and forth, then go back in to watch the news coverage. We stayed up watching the water in the front yard and by the garage, eventually sandbagging the garage door with towels and bags of potting soil. I finally fell asleep exhausted at 3:30 AM. Ed stayed up another hour. We were awakened at 6:30 AM by Linda Millan checking on us. She told us she'd seen footage of our area on the news and was worried. They were okay in Kingwood. We went back to sleep and I woke up at 10. I saw the same news coverage. I decided to walk down toward the bayou to see what I could see. |
