An incomplete, annotated list of places we can walk to from our house
(in order, more or less, of proximity)
- A cool loungy bar.
- A good liquor store.
- A dry cleaner (Yes, I do walk there with laundry.).
- An Irish pub.
- An “upscale dive” bar and restaurant.
- A gas station (Could walk there with a gas can if I ran out of gas in the driveway. Plus they have a good beer selection.).
- A wine bar.
- A real bagel shop.
- A coffee roasting company.
- The post office.
- A used book store.
- One of the best restaurants in Dallas (We hear, we haven’t tried it yet.).
- A winery!
- A Mexican seafood restaurant.
- A nursery.
- The library.
- A locksmith.
- A bead store.
- Starbucks.
- A good breakfast / coffee place.
- Another well-reviewed restaurant we have not been to yet.
- Radio Shack.
- A hardware store.
- A UPS Store.
- A really good independent record store.
- Whole Foods.
The first half of this list is within a range of a 1/2 block to 2 or 3 blocks away. I would not get in a car to drive to even most of the second half of the list, even if it’s hot. Whole Foods is almost a mile away, so while I have walked there and walked home with groceries, it is not something I would do every day.
In addition, we have walked to the lake, a bit over 2 miles away. And a lot of the restaurants and bars along Greenville Avenue, as well as the Granada Theater, an excellent music venue, would be nice walks (nearly 2 miles) in nice weather, provided you weren’t going with someone crabby. These fall into a different category though, where a walk is part of the goal.
Nearly all of these were a nice surprise; either we didn’t notice they were so close, or we didn’t realize they were such treats.
