Estate sale
I was just walking back from the post office and noticed a huge traffic jam in front of one of the Swiss Avenue mansions behind our house. There were signs for an estate sale, so I went in. What a madhouse! There were at least twenty people with name tags working there, almost like docents. There were Dallas police officers serving as guards, and giant signs stating “The Rules”. Most of the items for sale were not my taste at all, and were mighty expensive, but I did walk away with a piece of Thanksgiving sheet music for $3. I bought it because a) I like having old sheet music on the piano for holidays and b) it had the name and address of the pianist (and presumably one-time house tenant): Ann Criswell, 5901 Swiss Ave., written on the front. Then I came home and looked the house up in our historic district directory. I was surprised to see that even last year when the directory was published, First Baptist Church of Dallas owned the house. A little Googling showed why. W.A. Criswell was a famous pastor of the church for about 50 years. These large urban Southern Baptist churches are in a class of their own down here; they look like college campuses, and their heads live very well. Evidently Criswell got Billy Graham into preaching. About $3.2 million of his wealth was in antiques. But Good God, the Criswells Sure Did Collect a Lot of, Um, Things.
