Miscellaneous X-mas updates

  • All of our mailed packages have reached their destinations. All of our gifts (I think) have arrived here, including one by special courier (more on that after Christmas). Aside: tracking information is still dismal. At least the delivery estimates part of it.
  • My office is one of the upstairs front bedrooms here, so over the last few days I have witnessed the delivery frenzy on our street first hand. I’ve seen DHL, UPS, FedEx, USPS, and special couriers in a constant stream. I’ve seen one delivery person pushing a huge cart of boxes by hand up and down the street, no truck in sight. I’ve seen a FedEx truck do a U-turn at fairly high speed on LaVista, a somewhat busy cross street a block away.
  • We have plenty of treats! I’ve baked lots of cookies, plus Ed’s office evidently has a tradition of bringing in food gifts for everyone. So we have candy, gingerbread, baklava, pumpkin bread, cranberry bread and more cookies. Since Ed was out for the first part of the week, he became aware of this late in the game, so I hurriedly made six batches of Becky’s Sugar and Spice Nuts Wednesday night. Those are always a hit, and easy.
  • We had carolers last night! A large group of adults and kids, some of whom I recognized as neighbors, stopped by and serenaded us with a few songs. It was very nice.
  • Erica and I walked over to some of the stores near us to see what we could see. I’ve seen the stores but hadn’t been in them. We bought a few stocking stuffers for Ed. This will become my substitute for 19th Street in the Heights, where I could go last minute without worrying about crowds or parking for gifts. My favorite store was an antique / art store called Curiosities that had a nice collection of odd items. Including Oddfellow items!
  • Ed and I went out today and bought our Christmas present for each other, a spinning bike. It was always our plan to set the fourth bedroom up as an exercise room, and that was the first step. We got lucky and were able to buy a floor model at a great price. Ed is up there breaking it in right now.
