St. Paddy’s Day, Texas style

We’ve been hearing about the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dallas since before we moved here. The parade was today, and ’tis true, ’tis a lot of fun.

We’d heard it compared to Mardi Gras, so we were expecting floats and beads, but we weren’t expecting the pastries. See, the first floats started tossing out Moon Pies, then came the occasional Twinkie and Honey Bun. Soon there were more sugary snacks than people could eat, so they started throwing them back at the floats, and at the spectators across the street. Eventually, a few people started breaking out ammunition they had brought from home: bagels! Bagels flying through the air, and muffins! Then a tortilla-themed float appeared, and its riders started tossing, you guessed it! Green tortillas! W00t! The funniest thing was watching the dogs in the parade merrily gobbling up squished snack cakes. The Budwesier Clydesdales were more well-behaved.

It is early afternoon here now, and I can already hear bands playing. I think it will be a wild night here, with an Irish pub within staggering distance of our house. Ed and I will probably wander over there later, and hopefully not stagger home too much.

(Yes, I know it’s not really St. Patrick’s Day today in the U.S., but it is in Ireland).
