Hurricane Ike

I can’t take my eyes off the coverage of hurricane Ike surging onto Galveston. I love Galveston, and it is hard to watch the water coming over the seawall, knowing that the storm itself is still a ways out. Two of my friends have evacuated because they live close to the water. My other Houston friends are staying put, but remembering what it felt like to look at the storm tracks when Rita was pointed at Houston, I know they are scared.

On the other hand, I kind of wish I was there with them. It’s a cliche, but there is something appealing about hunkering down for a hurricane, getting supplies together, boarding up the house, having a party, and then closing the door and trying to sleep while the winds howl outside.

I put up our “Don’t Give Up the Ship” flag today. Good luck Galveston and Houston!
