chickens whistling past the grave
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 2003

We finally did attend the rodeo.

The exhibit at right, in the children's area, is always my favorite. In a tragic way.

Other favorites are the calf scramble, the pig races, and bullriding.

But more than these things, nothing screamed Texas more than the opening song of the headline entertainment. As some probably famous country singer sang a song about "proud to be an American", the JumboTron showed images of fighter planes. All the booted and hatted attendees, many of them bankers and executives by day, waved their 10-gallon hats, tears in their eyes, hating the French and the Dixie Chicks.
