Texas Independence Weekend

We saw the movie The Alamo on Friday. We thought it was very good, especially Billy Bob Thornton as David Crockett. Everything looked very authentic, including the Alamo set. It was nice to see how it probably looked before the city of San Antonio grew up around it and on top of it. The film also tied together many of the facts I've read while visiting various museums and historic sites, making them seem more real. The final scenes were a stirring depiction of the Battle of San Jacinto, which was a nice surprise since we were planning to go to the battlefield to watch the battle re-enactment the next day.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. It poured all day, clearing about an hour before the re-enactment. We decided to drive down, only to find that the battle had been postponed until today. This turned out to be a mistake, since today's weather is worse than yesterday's, and they could have had it yesterday after all. Anyway, we still got to see the re-enactors and camps, and there were other interesting things to see as part of the San Jacinto Day Festival.

I'm really enjoying learning Texas history, and this made me realize how much I've grown to like Texas.
